Finnish Weather and Acceptance
Here we are in the first days
of May, a few days following Vappu celebrations and all the hats and booze
being set aside, we head back to real life. However another side we tend to
forget every year, is how confusing Mother Nature's treatment towards us Finns
and all people who live on this Scandinavian nature filled land, and how the
cold but also sunny, oh and rainy weather we interfere with. To our fellow
readers, who either live here, or are just filled with curiosity with how life
in Finland is, I would like to let you know one thing: ALWAYS CHECK THE
WEATHER, on a daily basis! Might as well do an hourly check. I am writing this
as I look outside the large window of the office, which shows a sunny view,
through which our lovely friend, the sun leaves for a bathroom/coffee break
every now and then. The clouds have become the annoying brothers and sisters
(as we are an equal, diverse team, it is my responsibility to acknowledge that
clouds can both be female and male! gender equality people!) of us Finns. This
means that even though the frequency of them attending our days during this
month, we are in a way forced to accept them, because you know, family is
family, and we have to tolerate the best (warm sunny companions of our sibling
clouds) and the worst (the rainy-windy bully that quite often follows) they
come to provide us with.
The good thing about the
community here is that no matter what companion our siblings -the clouds, come
with, we Finns tend to comfort one another with our love for coffee -or generally
a good warm or fresh drink, that tames our emotional annoyance towards those
occasional bullies.
Quite frankly, however, these
occasional dull weather occurrences are just a temporary reminder that June and July are hopefully providing us with lovelier times! So for those who plan on
staying in Finland or visiting it during these times, no fear! Good days to
come!
